History of the Adventist Church

The Seventh-day Adventist movement grew out of the religious revival of the early 1800’s that expected Jesus’ return around 1844.

When Jesus didn’t return, a number of this group began to carefully look again at Biblical prophecies and teachings. As a result, the Seventh-day Adventist Church was officially formed in 1863.

Today, the movement is worldwide with over 15 million members. There are over 25,000 active Adventists in Great Britain.

The teachings of Adventism include:

  • Jesus Christ is our God and Saviour. He is alive today and plays an active part in our lives.
  • Christ will return again to Earth in glory to bring in an everlasting kingdom
  • Saturday is the seventh-day of the week that God blessed at His creation of the world, and that this seventh-day has special meaning for the world today.
  • Those that have died are in a sleep-like state awaiting the return of Jesus to this Earth. When He does return He will resurrect to eternal life those that have placed their trust in God.
  • Our health (physical, emotional, and spiritual) is to be looked after as we are holistic beings
  • Christians are to share God’s love in practical ways.

Mission Statement of the Central London Adventist Church (as seen in the early Christian church recorded in Acts 2:42-47)

  • Glorifying God (Praise)
  • Going into our communities and winning people to Christ (Outreach)
  • Caring for each other (Fellowship and Giving)
  • Equipping for service (Teaching)
